Bruin Bites 3/11/22
Hello Bruins! Next Saturday, March 19th, Be The Match will be hosting an event at Tri-West Middle School from 9am-12pm to get people tested to become a potential bone marrow donor for someone in the future. One of our students, Brook Parker, was diagnosed with Ewing’s Sarcoma in 2019. She has now been in remission for over 18 months, however, the strong chemo she received resulted in Acute Myeloid Leukemia. The only cure for AML is a bone marrow transplant. Brook has had 4 potential donors from the registry, but there have been some setbacks in getting these donors cleared. So, Brook, along with thousands of other patients diagnosed each year, are counting on us to get tested and possibly save their life.
The test is a simple mouth swab and is super quick and easy. Anyone ages 18-40 and in general good health is eligible. Even though there is an age limit on being added to the registry, if accepted, you can remain on the registry up until 60 years of age so there are many years to help others in the future! In addition, if you are not quite 18, but will be soon, you can register now and when at the age of 18, the registry will automatically send a kit to your home. If you cannot attend, you can scan the event barcode and have a testing kit sent to your home or visit https://bethematch.org for additional information. You could save someone’s life! Hope to see you there! Brooke Strong
